Boulder Board & Block Co. is a brand of Boulder Artisans — a name chosen deliberately, because that's exactly what we are. Genuine artisans. People who work with their hands, sweat the details, and refuse to cut corners. And we're lucky enough to do it from one of the most beautiful places in the country: Boulder, Colorado. When we're not creating sawdust, you can find us mountain biking, hiking, skiing & snowboarding.
Before the sawdust, I spent my career in finance and technology — worlds built on precision, systems, and solving hard problems. That mindset didn't go away when I picked up a hand plane. It just found a better home.
Wood is where I live now. And I don't take it lightly.
No Shortcuts. No Substitutes.
A lot of woodworkers use inexpensive lumber and dress it up with stain to make it look like something it's not. That's not how we work.
We source all of our lumber from ethical, renewable suppliers — because the integrity of what we build starts long before it reaches the shop. When lumber comes in, we mill it ourselves. Every time. Because that's the only way to ensure it's done right.
If I want walnut in a piece, I use walnut. If I want the warmth of cherry or the richness of maple, I source that wood — because the color, the character, and the grain you see are real. Every piece of wood in every board and block we make is chosen intentionally, not because it was left over from another project.
Nature already did the hard work of making these woods beautiful. My job is to honor that — not hide it.
Finished the Right Way
We finish every piece with a premium hard wax oil — the same category of finish used on high-end hardwood floors, chosen for its beauty, its durability, and the way it lets wood breathe and age naturally.
You won't find plastic-looking poly finishes here. You won't find anything that sits on top of the wood like a film, dulling the grain or masking the figure. Hard wax oil soaks in, protects from within, and lets the wood look exactly like what it is: something real, something alive, something worth keeping.
We apply three coats by hand. Because that's what it takes to do it right.
Built to Be an Heirloom
Everything at Boulder Board & Block Co. is made one piece at a time. Every block is hand-laid, every pattern is intentional, every piece of wood is placed with symmetry and purpose. No scraps. No shortcuts.
We're so confident in the quality of the materials we use that we offer something virtually unheard of in this industry: a resurfacing and reconditioning program. Your first two resurfacings are on us, not that you'll need them though— just cover the shipping. Not because we expect our pieces to wear out, but because we know they won't. We offer this program because we want to preserve what we've created together, and because the superior woods and finishes we build with are genuinely made to go the distance.
Most makers don't offer this. Most can't.
